In 1835, a New York speculator named Edmond Bostwick purchased land about 18 miles southwest of Lansing and subdivided it for settlement. The settlers named this area after Bostwick’s wife, Charlotte. Charlotte incorporated as a village in 1863, then as a city in 1871.
