Prevent Propane Run-outs By Planning Ahead!

propane supplier michiganOne of the more important tasks you have as a propane customer is keeping track of your fuel use. Checking in on your tank gauge is an easy thing to forget – especially with all we have on our minds these days.

Keeping an eye on your fuel levels is particularly important this time of year because Michigan Frost Laws impose seasonal load weight and speed restrictions on vehicles, including our propane delivery trucks. Right now, for example, we’re allowed to haul 50 percent loads at a reduced speed of 35 mph.

While this does not mean that we are experiencing delivery delays. it does mean that you should plan ahead if you’re a will-call customer: please be sure to call when your propane tank is no less than one-quarter full if you want to avoid a propane run-out.

The Problem With Running Out Of Propane

Running out of propane is not a fun experience, and it could end up being a lot worse than that: for one thing, you’ll have to pay a propane professional to pressure test and restart your heating system after a service interruption (it’s the law).

But that’s not the only complication that can result from a propane run-out: if a valve or gas line is open when the propane supply runs out, a leak can occur when the system is recharged. Air and moisture that enters an empty tank can also accelerate tank corrosion, which can make a leak more difficult to detect. Lastly, any pilot lights on your appliances will go out – a dangerous problem if not handled properly.

The bottom line here is that a propane run-out is something you definitely want to avoid. How do you do that?

  1. Be proactive. Waiting until the last minute for delivery – especially in cold weather – is a recipe for a fuel run-out. Schedule your propane delivery when your tank is no less than one-quarter full (ideally a little before then).
  2. Switch to automatic propane delivery. When you sign up for automatic propane delivery, our automated system will estimate (with high accuracy) when you need a refill based on your past usage and the current weather. When your tank is nearing one-quarter full, you’ll be contacted directly to schedule a propane delivery. The service is FREE.
